What does "lspci" show?  I'd presume not, I think that's basicly
what the installer uses to tell if it should bring up
the GUI configurator.  Some sort of interrupt issue?

Can you manually bring the interface up?  Something like
"modprobe 3c5x9; ifconfig eth0 <ip> netmask <netmask>".
