I just got off the phone with ATT.

I had to find the time to put together a machine, load Winsucks98,
and hang on hold for half an hour.

I told the person that I had determined the problem was on their
end and that the modem was not able to get an address from their
upstream server via DHCP.

They took down the serial numbers and MAC address of the modem and
said, "Oh, it has never been configured."  It will be running in
about two days.

Jeez, I hate stupid companies with stupid people (excluding this last one).
