Try this first:

  export DISPLAY=:0
  xhost +
  sawfish&

if sawfish doesn't work, you might try some other ones:
twm, fvwm, olvm, kwm, and so on.

A warning, however: xhost + says "Turn off access control.
Let anyone write (or read!) my display." If you started
the X-process, you might not need the xhost line. If you
get a "permission denied" message, then you /do/ need the
xhost command.

Finally, this is the sign of deeper problems. How do you
start X? If you just use "X", you will usually get a
window-managerless display. If you use "startx" you will
usually get a windows manager (unless some other files are
damaged).
