Will get back to you Monday. In the mean time, try "linux 3" in LILO (note 
the space). In runlevel three, X is not usually running. In the case you 
mentioned below, you were in runlevel 5 (presumably... don't know if that is 
the number Debian uses for it).

If you want, you could look at /etc/innittab... the distros I've used have 
some good comments on runlevels in there.
