I'm having troubles like this around the office.  My Windows boxes pick
up DHCP eventually, but between the time for the ethernet switch to
validate the port, and the time it takes for DHCP to fire, I get a lot
of complaints from users that their connection isn't working.

With reliability issues like this, I don't think @home switching to DHCP
is a good idea... They are just asking for pain.
