I should have specified _when_ to run those. You'll have to login (through 
GPM), and then (when you get the blank screen), switch to a virtual consol 
(CTRL-ALT-F1), login, and then do the 'ps' commands.

It might be useful to do 'ps -efH' (H organizes in a hierarchy), and look for 
what processes are children of GPM. Here's mine:

Note that I'm running KDM, which spawned X and -:0, which spawned startkde.
