Sorry for the delay in writing... been out of town.

Hmmm.... that is very similar to what I see. I suppose that is both good and 
bad. I think I'll have to ask more broad questions again...

How did you install? Network or from a CD? Have you tried installing an 
update? Did it ever work?

Also, can you send the script /etc/X11/Xsession ?  That is the script 
responsible for starting the desktop environment. Not sure what exactly it 
looks like on Debian.
