ODBC should work fine.

Note the keyword in the above statement: "should".

We've got an ODBC <-> JDBC bridge for some (admittedly non-web) software,
and except for Microsoft's shitty ODBC drivers, it works fine.

The perl database driver has ODBC modules... python too, probably.
