When you say HDC above do you mean,

1. an IDE cdrom drive that's configured as a master on the second ide
channel, using the ide-scsi emulation driver to appear as scd0
or
2. a SCSI cdrom drive attached to some scsi controller you didn't mention

?

If the answer is #1 then,
- is the ide-scsi driver claiming the other cdrom as well? 
- are you passing any options to the kernel via your bootloader or
    modules.conf to control which driver claims the cdrom drives?

Can you give us dmesg output?
