i use the "vm" package from within XEmacs.

it doesn't have IMAP support... yet.  it's in the works, so far as i
know.

reasons i like the XEmacs+vm combination:

1. same keybindings for all my text processing needs (i also use
   XEmacs-based solutions for IRC, news/mailing-lists, coding, shell
   usage, etc)

2. common cut-and-paste (or, kill-and-yank) buffers between all those
   apps.

3. proportional fonts.  a bummer for some things (e.g., "ls -al"
   output), but makes others quite a bit nicer to read.
