Have you tried checking what's on the other virtual consoles (F2 through F5
or so)?  Ctl-Alt-F2, if you are in the X display, Alt-F2 otherwise.

Another thing you might want to try doing is running a full badblocks on
the drive.  At the boot prompt do "linux rescue", then tell it not to mount
your drives.  It'll give you a prompt, then do:

   cd /
   mknod hda        (assuming the drive is on /dev/hda)
   badblocks -svw hda

This will wipe the drive and test it for errors.
