Note that bridging over an ethertap probably requires at least one of
the last few released kernels.  There was a bug in the kernel that
caused these configurations to lock the machine quite quickly after the
bridge came up.

I've used CIPE in the past for bridging over long distances, and had
success with it.  However, that was years ago.
