I am not running SuSE and so don't know what kernel they are using.  I
am running Debian myself.  But let me suggest checking for the usb
modules.

  modprobe usbkbd

USB keyboards work fine for me.  I know I have that module loaded.
You should not need to modify XF86Config for the keyboard.
