RHEL4 is more like FC3, so yeah, on FC3/RHEL4 it would "just work".
However, on FC4 you get:

   guin:~$ rpm -ql libstdc++
   /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6
   /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.7
   guin:~$ rpm -ql compat-libstdc++-33
   /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5
   /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5.0.7
   guin:~$ rpm -ql compat-libstdc++-296
   /usr/lib/libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.so
   /usr/lib/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so
   /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3
   guin:~$

Well, I didn't in the first message, but then I decided I should cut it off
before someone else mentioned it without prefixing it with "don't ever do
this".  ;-)
