Just for you:

This thing you run on a central server, it connects to the clients and does
an rsync, then uses rdiff-backup to manage daily and weekly historic copies
of this data.  This works around some issues with rdiff-backup, but means
that you are storing 3 copies of all your data.  However, with 2TB drives
being cheap, that's not a particular concern to me...

Anyway, it will ping the client and if the client isn't connected right
when it runs, will defer the backup some amount of time, before finally
giving up.

This system is very robust, I've been using this harness for over 5 years,
with different back-ends over the years, and it is just rock solid.  In
fact, this harness is the core of what the server backup system that you
think is too complicated is based on.

See the README for what it takes to set it up, it's pretty simple.
