Mark's idea that it might be a screen saver is a good one then.

Unfortunately for me I know nothing of Fedora 18.  But I think the
default desktop is GNOME 3.  Can someone who is running GNOME 3 post
the steps to turn the screen saver off?  (Oh Maxwell! [smile])
