Hi all-
Was contacted by a recruiter from VMware. I'm not particularly interested in
switching employers currently, but I thought I'd pass it on. The option of
working remotely is available, for those of you who are (like me) attached to
the front range.

Ernie (my contact info is at the bottom of this email)
Senior Linux Systems Engineer
We're looking for Linux Systems Engineers for our Desktop Solutions R&D group to
work on Client Virtualization. We are using our desktop virtualization
technology (most mature, high-performance) to drastically change the way that
desktop and laptop computers are used today. Virtualization allows end-users to
get the rich experience they expect, while giving administrators the control
that they need to ensure corporate data and applications are secure and
well-managed. This is a key part of VMware's vClient initiative, announced at
VMworld 2008 and is a major new area of development and innovation for VMware.
While we intend to leverage our existing desktop virtualization software to
accomplish this, we'll be investing heavily into Linux as a supporting layer.
We are working on improving how Linux interoperates with our desktop
virtualization software; another important job will be to improve the experience
of end-users of the virtualized desktop. This will involve end-to-end debugging
of the software stack (virtualization layer, Linux) to find gaps in end-user
experience and make improvements. A few examples are power consumption/battery
life, device support, and interactive performance. If you're passionate about
making improvements to Linux to fundamentally improve how it works on the
desktops and laptops, this job is for you.
Of course, we'll be contributing what enhancements we do make back to the
open-source maintainers, so experience working with those projects is a plus.
As a Linux Systems Engineer, you will:
-Enhance Linux hardware support for a variety of laptop and desktop platforms
-Enhance core Linux system components -Work to contribute enhancements back to
upstream communities -Enhance performance and compatibility of VMware products
on Linux -Contribute to a core Linux platform that will be used as a delivery
mechanism for future VMware products
Requirements
-Linux internals experience: familiarity with design and implementation issues
related to Linux on laptop hardware such as kernel, power management, device
hot-plugging
-5+ years systems programming experience
-Linux debugging experience, both kernel and user level -Ability to interact
with open source projects and contribute changes to upstream code bases
-Top-to-bottom Linux experience, from kernel to user level.
-Familiarity with distribution configuration and hardware auto-detection and
auto-configuration
Our values:
Excellence and innovation
Straightforwardness and open communications
A sense of fun and an appreciation of a balanced life
Delivery on our promises to our partners, our customers and ourselves
A passion for what we do and the value we deliver
