Overview

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON, Inc.), a non-profit
science corporation dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land
use and invasive species impact ecology. We are currently planning the NEON
project - an observatory comprising more than 60 atmospheric, environmental
and biological monitoring experiments distributed throughout twenty domains
across the United States, Hawaii, Alaska & the Caribbean, monitored and
controlled in real-time from our headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. A
leading-edge flexible Cyber Infrastructure (CI) is being designed to support
current and future needs of the Observatory.

 

Summary

NEON is looking for a Linux System Administrator to set up and maintain the
computing infrastructure necessary to perform complex scientific data
processing, warehousing, and publication in both prototype and operational
settings. This is a hands-on position combining Linux system administration,
enterprise class database administration, application administration, and
desktop support. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

*	Responsible for setting up and maintaining the following systems:
Linux Servers and software stacks, authentication, management of storage
arrays, disaster recovery systems and security systems.
*	Responsible for the design and scaling of the NEON CI data center
including physical space, storage, and compute solutions.
*	Responsible for proactive monitoring, performance tuning, and
capacity planning to ensure storage & processing capabilities meet current
and future requirements.
*	Responsible for troubleshooting and solving reported system
problems.
*	Responsible for evaluating, deploying, and supporting virtualization
technologies as appropriate.
*	Participate in the evaluation & application of new technologies to
meet the needs of the organization.
*	Responsible for planning and documenting the system configuration.
*	Assist staff with end-user assistance & client systems support. 
*	Install, configure, and maintain COTS enterprise applications.  
*	Work directly with the Cyber infrastructure team to develop, test,
and produce systems capable of meeting the data production requirements for
all NEON instrumentation platform data. 
*	Responsible for scripting or programming needed to support system
maintenance activities.

 

Required Experience:

*	5-10 years experience on  Linux System Administration

.         Experience with virtualization, including virtual applications,
desktops, servers & storage. Experience deploying and managing virtual
environments such as XenServer and VMware.

.         Excellent grasp of current storage technologies, incl. SANs/NAS,
Deduplication, etc.

*	Demonstrated experience with 2 or more scripting languages

 

Education:

.         BS Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information
Technology

 

Preferred Experience:

*	Experience with Maximo, JBOSS,   Oracle, or WebSphere
administration 
*	Experience with distributed resource management
*	Experience with Parallel File System (e.g. Lustre or GFS)
*	Experience in maintaining enterprise scale process management and
workflow infrastructure to support data production applications. 

.         Experience with Platform Computing LSF for parallelization of
computing in a medium scale High Performance Cluster environment is highly
desirable.

Skills and Abilities:

*	Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
*	Ability to work in a team environment
*	Ability to work in a fast moving, start-up environment
*	Ability to multitask

Physical Requirements:

*	Must be able to lift 40 - 50 lbs.
