Job Description
This position is responsible for operating and maintaining IT capabilities, including networks, server and computer hardware and software/services, and helps to ensure cost-effective support of systems in use by UNAVCO employees. The PBO System Administrator is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of all project-specific PBO computing hardware and software.

 Working Relationships

Internal:  Receives guidance on IT priorities from Technical Lead.  Reports results on achievements in the areas of staff support and project status to Technical Lead.  Reaches out to other system administrators when needed.  Provides helpdesk support to UNAVCO staff.

External:  Works with various IT suppliers for staying current on hardware and procurement tasks. IRIS system administrators for colocation support, and peers in related fields in the interest of staying current in the IT field.

 Essential Job Functions

Provide systems administration work including infrastructure application, storage, network, and backup management as well as implementation of new technologies.
Participate in active monitoring of IT security throughout the organization and making recommendations for improvements to systems.
Provides end-user support in the areas of email, printing, calendar, workgroup collaboration tools, remote connectivity, anti-virus protection, shared files and folders, hardware and software.
Works as part of an SA team to support application and service management including deployment, maintenance, and retirement.
Adheres to UNAVCO IT policy to insure that computer systems work in conjunction with other UNAVCO program systems.
Works closely with project staff to ensure effective solutions that are within budget, efficient, maintainable, and conform to UNAVCO IT Standards.
Proactively monitors project equipment and ensures notification pathways are in place so failures are detected quickly and that necessary remedial actions are carried out promptly.
Visits regularly with PBO staff and builds relationships with customers to foster more effective communications and support.
Works with field/operations staff as needed to support communications from sites to each other and the Internet and ultimately PBO dataflow equipment.
Maintains and tests backup capabilities in Socorro, NM for PBO capabilities.
Actively monitors systems and networks to ensure data security and integrity and participates in support coverage during off-hours.
Ensures necessary levels of documentation, in accordance with UNAVCO IT standards.
Stays abreast of trends in pertinent computing-related areas to support planning and systems optimization.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the successful operation of the business.

Required Skills
Experience using and administering of Solaris, Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux operating systems.
Experience in performing a wide range of tasks, from end user support to backend server/network architecture projects.
Developed decision-making, prioritization and critical thinking skills.
Competency with a programming language (e.g. C/C++, Java, Perl, Python).
Experience with Cisco networking equipment including VPN Concentrator and/or PIX/ASA.
Extensive experience with IP networks including TCP/IP, UDP, SCTP, and firewalls.
Working knowledge of Apache web server, Tomcat application server, and PostgreSQL.
Excellent and demonstrable interpersonal skills in relating to subordinates, peers, supervisors, and community representatives, including good oral and written communication in English.
Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.
Knowledge of and experience using an issue-tracking system.
Preferred

Experience with Sun X86 and SPARC hardware platforms.
Experience with Cisco networking equipment and configuration of firewalls, VPNs, and dynamic routing.
Demonstrable proficiency generating user documentation in a wiki-based system and use of source-control repositories.
Required Experience
Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, with an emphasis on computing systems administration, or in another related field.
Three years of relevant systems administration experience, preferably in a scientific/technical organization, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to balance, bend, stoop, climb, kneel, crawl, and climb stairs; sit for sustained periods of time; use fingers and repetitive motion on computing and communications devices; ability to carry items up to 45 pounds and lift items over 45 pounds; and the ability to reach above shoulders; ability to hear and speak effectively on phone; the ability to see computer screen with detailed screen menu in low lighting conditions. 

Mental Requirements

Must be able to understand opposing points of view on highly complex issues and to negotiate and integrate different viewpoints.  Must be able to organize and prioritize own work schedule.  Must be able to make decisions that have significant impact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside immediate work unit.  Must be able to organize and prioritize work schedules.  Must be able to compose letters, outlines, memos, and basic reports and/or to orally communicate technical information.  Must be able to make informal presentations.  Must be able to compute, analyze and interpret numerical data.
