I just did an experiment with unsetting DISPLAY. My last response had been 
under the assumption that an unset DISPLAY still let you write to the display 
if you owned it, which is not the case. I still don't know why running things 
as root worked thought. So if I mistakenly accused you as running as root, 
sorry about that.
