hmmm....

   this means that you aren't running in normal multi-user mode. you are
starting up in the mode that brings you right into X. i'm not too familiar
with this, but http://www.linuxdoc.org/ should have something about this

specifically, http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/XWindow-User-HOWTO-2.html

at the bottom is a section titled 2.4 The X Display Manager which should be
helpful.
