Okay, so it looks like you are running GDM. In my distro, the configs for 
this are in '/etc/X11/gdm/'. There is a directory in there called 'Sessions' 
that contains startup scripts for each of the desktop environements. Mine has 
KDE, Gnome, IceWM, and SawMill as choices. Each one of these scripts calls 
'/etc/X11/Xsession', passing it the name of the window manager (e.g. KDE 
script says: 'exec /etc/X11/Xsession KDE'. Does debian look the same or 
similar?
