DING DING DING! We have a winner!

As some of you may know, the 2.4 kernel was released January 4, 2001 at
23:00. Everybody knows about the contributions of the front-line people
like Linus "Mush-for-brains" Torvalds. There are a lot of people behind
the scenes who make it all happen that you might not know about.

For example, Bill Wendling thumbed his nose at Linus' notion that 2.3
would be a short development-cycle, and created a project plan which
(compensating for many factors, I'm sure) most accurately represented
the actual 2.4 release. On January 26, 1999, Bill submitted the winning
estimated release date for 2.4.0 of January 6, 2001.

Good job, Bill Wendling! We at tummy.com salute you!

While I'm sure Bill needs no more than the adoration of a happy Linux
community, he also gets a certificate of Project Estimating Skill and/or
Luck, a free copy of the Open Sound System audio drivers, a nifty VALinux
Systems polo shirt, a Byte pocket protector, and a subscription to KRUD.

Law enforcement siezed the "Some of what the folks who guessed sometime
in 2037 are smoking" prize. Sorry.

You could already be a winner. Remember, Bill submitted his winning
estimate TWO YEARS AGO. The 2.6 kernel pool is already under way...
Submit your entries at

I'd like to thank 4Front Technologies (www.opensound.com), VALinux Systems
(www.valinux.com), Byte.com, and tummy.com, ltd. for their generous
prize offerings. If you'd like to contribute a prize to the 2.6 pool,
please drop me a line at kernelpool-prizes at tummy.com.

Note that ranking is weighted by when the vote was made. This means that
the peole who last week guessed it would be this week are ranked lower than
the people who last year guessed it would be next week. Say that three
times fast.

Thanks everyone for participating, and thanks to the Linux community for
another great kernel.

Happy new millenium,
Sean
