Sorry... fat fingered that one. I meant GDM -- The X login screen.  Here's 
the order:

Boot
lilo
initing everything ("inventory")
X starts
GDM login thingy comes up
You log in
Blank screen comes up (right)
You do Ctrl-Alt-F1 and ps - try to find which window manager is running
