that behavior (locking up X while viewing certain documents) sounds
like it might be a font rendering issue -- the application asks X to
render a font at 1000-point size, and X goes off and thinks for a
while.

if you have a chance, try to recreate the problem when you have some
other way of getting into the system (serial terminal, telnet/ssh
session).  running 'top' or 'vmstat' might give you some idea about
what is actually locking up...
