Do not use xhost!

It has all sort of security implications. If you have to, use xauth. But as 
Wayne pointed out the real way to do thing is to use ssh X forwarding(by using 
the -X flag or turning it on in /etc/ssh/sshd_config). It also happens to be 
the easiest way to do things as everything "just works". Your DISPLAY variable 
automatically gets setup properly and you don't have to run xhost/xauth each 
time.
