Thanks. Do you know how I can figure out which ".pcf" in file corresponds to 
the fonts?

In any event, I think I'm beginning to understand whats going on. The machine 
that is giving me grief is at the CSU computer science dept. and it has a few 
foreign language fonts in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts". My guess is that the sys 
admins here chose to install foreign fonts for the foreign students and there 
is a conflict. This may be a problem in the RedHat distribution, but few 
people probably run into it.
