You might try logging in as root and looking at
'~user/.xsession-errors'
That file should show you what it's trying to run and having problems
with.

That should be ok as long as you had the space there unallocated
before. You might have to 'mkfs /dev/hda10' to make a filesystem on
it...
as long as there are no overlaps it should be fine.
