[NCLUG] USB Test?

Hi folks.
	I'm still trying to get my HP printer & scanner running, using hpijs and 
sane-hp respectively.  Both devices are USB-connected, and I'm striking out 
with both of them.  This has led me to wonder if it's something about USB on 
my system.
	So, anyone know if there's some simple way I can verify 
that the bus is functional and on speaking terms with my linux install?  I 
just want to eliminate this possibility so I can go back to trying to figure 
out what I'm doing wrong.  Thanks,
