 Sounds like the window manager has decided that you need to do something
other than what you were doing before. If it's a logitech trackman like
the one I'm using then the middle button sends the same event code as does
a normal 3-button mouse. You should be able to use "xev" to see what X is
catching from the device.

 You might be in for a wade through the window manager config though. I
searched google real quick on this and only found this one as relevant but
