Back when I was on the sane mailing list (sane at mostang.com) and was working on
the UMAX1220U driver, I would often give people this advice: If you're
courageous, open up your scanner and note down the numbers of all the
microchips you find on the main board. Then, post the info to the SANE
mailing list and see if anyone recognizes them (or, do a search on the web
for the chip names).
The reason is that many scanners (especially the cheap ones) are build on some
OEM "scanner-on-a-chip" that is used by various models and manufacturer. If
your scanner shares a chip with another supported scanner, chances are you
can use the driver for that scanner for yours as well.
