Not sure if this will help, but make sure your USB device has the correct permissions assigned. I had a similar problem with a digital camera where I was unable to load a client application that connected to it via USB. To assign necessary permissions under RH 9:
Step 1. Find the device
a.) To check, type: ls /proc/bus/usb/001
001, would be your first USB port, 002 your second, etc.
b.) Write down the device file name (not the 001, e.g. 006)
Step 2. Edit the permissions
Type: su -c 'chmod a+w /proc/bus/usb/001/006'
(The 006 would have been the device number you wrote down in step 2b.)
