What the article says (I'm a WSJ subscriber, so I could read it) is 
Microsoft agreed to *license* the rights that SCO claims Linux is 
infringing, not acquire them.  The article says this may strengthen the 
perception of SCO's case against Linux by the suggestion that 
Microsoft's lawyers have looked at SCOs rights and deemed them worthy of 
paying for.
