[NCLUG] Mandrake kills MS

Hi Elizabeth,

I don't know what happened with your XP partition, but it would likely
break Mandrake badly to just reinstall XP now.

However, OpenOffice does a fine job of reading and writing most MS office
formats, and it is pretty simple to enable Mozilla to support Java.
For example, I have Mozilla 1.4.2, and the 1.4.2_03 JDK from Sun installed in
/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03 (the version numbers are coincidental).

The Java plugin is enabled by making a symlink in the Mozilla plugin directory
like so:

/usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.2/plugins:

    libflashplayer.so -> /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so
    libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
            /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
    libnullplugin.so

An easy site to test your Java configuration on is:
http://time.gov/timezone.cgi?Mountain/d/-7

Hope this helps,
JD
