Thanks, Sean & Bob, for the advice.  I'm printing out your
recommendations and taking them home so I can try to get the system back
up.  I'll let ya know how it turns out.

BTW, I did go from an older Athlon to a Sempron chip - not sure if that
qualifies for the dramatically different chip architecture Sean was
talking about.   I'll try to take notes about what's going wrong before
I recover.
