You need to have reasonable expectations. Most new groups will "sputter"
when they're started. Pick a day and time and location and stick to it.
The first Hacking Society meeting had 2 people at it besides Evelyn and I.
Since then we've had something around 300 different people attend the
Hacking Society meetings that have happened in 6 different states and in
Australia.
As long as you're willing to spend maybe 2 hours a month at the meeting,
and maybe another 2 to 4 hours a month preparing and promoting the meeting,
over 6 months, you'll probably get something. If you aren't willing to
commit to that level of involvement, you probably shouldn't start one.
