Indeed.  I would also take it one step further and say that this list is a
public forum, and therefore replies should, in general, be public as well.
Sure, the user can choose to send something not to the list if they really
decide it shouldn't be public, but I think in the case of a Linux "help"
sort of mailing list that having the default be a public reply is right.
Erring on the side of public response is, IMHO, best.
