I do know that, in my case, I was responding to, at the core, your
statements around:

which, in my experience with Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, and Debian, wasn't the
case at all. So I wanted to explore it further. Perhaps I misunderstood
what you were trying to say in the paragraph I reference above, but it
seems like I'm hardly the only one...
So, yes, perhaps Stephen interpreted it a bit more draconian that you meant
("forced" instead of "encouraged"), but I still think at the heart of it
that it's not really that bad in Fedora. The I'm feeling lucky in
google would, in under a page, get you where you need to go.
