So, here's how I burn CDs with my ubuntu/gnome desktop:
1) Use the "Places" menu to navigate to the .iso image I want
2) Right-click on the .iso image, and select "Write to CD..."
Or, if I want to create my own ISO image (i.e. burn a bunch of files to
a CD), I go to the "Places" menu, and select "CD/DVD Creator", then
drag-n-drop the files I want into the resulting window, and then click
the "Write to Disc" button.
Some people just want stuff to be hard ;o)
