I just checked and this is incorrect.  The LiveCD install will try and
shrink the current partition and make room for itself.

Ditto on that.  This is probably the safest way.  I have a separate
drive I use for home.  When I install on OS, I unplug the "home"
drive, and once everything is set up, I plug it back in and set
everything back up.
