This is, to some degree at least, thanks to subsidies and regulations.  I
have a tendency to favor unsubsidized goods over subsidized goods, all
else being equal -- which is another reason I'm not a fan of CFs.

True -- but the relationship of LEDs to CFs is similar to that of CFs to
incandescents; CFs are more expensive than incandescents and last longer,
while LEDs are more expensive than CFs and last longer.

They're *available* -- they just aren't very cheap.  People are used to a
particular price range for lightbulbs, and while CFs are more expensive
than incandescents, they are closer to that price range than LEDs.  As a
result, LED bulbs aren't quite as common in stores as CFs which, in turn,
aren't quite as common in stores as incandescents.  I can walk into
Wal-Mart and buy LED bulbs, though, if I want to -- or, at least, I could
the last time I checked (I haven't bought bulbs in months).

I just have to look a little harder to find them on the shelves.
