Boot with the "mem=" kernel parameter set to something smaller than
physical RAM.  IIRC, you can specify it as "mem=512M", but I may be
mis-remembering.

The default parameters for the RAM disc limit it's size to at most half
your RAM, you have to specify module parameters to adjust this if you want
to go that route, but I don't recall what they are off hand, use "modinfo"
to get it to tell you?  At this point I forget the module name...
