On Ubuntu, it's really easy, but you have to know that you need the
"alternate" install disk that uses the debian installer. Then it's just
a choice in the install. All of my machines are set up this way.

For screen capture, there's gtk-recordMyDesktop. It's a steaming pile
of crap. Don't use it. I haven't found anything better. For video
editing, Ubuntu comes pre-installed with PiTiVi, which isn't too bad.
It's not great, but it's not terrible either.
