Hello Kerry,
Start with installing two extensions from extensions.gnome.org:
Desktop Icons Switch extension
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/237/desktop-icons-switch/
Applications Menu extension
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/6/applications-menu/
Now you will have desktop icons and a menu like GNOME 2.x.
Keep in mind, applications will only show up in the GNOME dashboard
(and menu, I think) if that application has created a .desktop
shortcut file. If you are installing something on your own you will
need to create a .desktop shortcut file in
~/.local/share/applications/. The GNOME documentation has examples:
