[NCLUG] cannot ping ubuntu 12.04 when logged off

Are you using a wireless connection?  If so, it may not be started unless you
are logged in.  Perhaps you can just lock your screen instead of logging out?
You should also be able to set your wireless connection to start on boot which
would fix it.
