A Blast From the Past: The Land Attack
---------------------------------------
http://www.nwfusion.com/news/1997/1215meltman.html

Nearly four years ago we were combatting the effects of m3lt's
simple Land attack, which was crashing Windows machines and
Cisco routers and switches throughout the world. Cisco
engineers worked around the clock over the 1997 Thanksgiving
holiday to come up with a fix for the vulnerability land.c
exploited.

The code's author, a 16 year-old high school student from Montreal,
noted that he couldn't use the DoS tool on his own Canadian
networks because his service provider prevented IP spoofing.
His comment about releasing the tool to the public: "Perhaps
this made some people realize that they can be the target of
such attacks. Some people need to wake up; this type of attack
shouldn't even happen".
