Some followup.

I can confirm that Stephen was right about the ATmega2560 chip in the
Arduino Mega not being open source.
>From the board level on up, many 3D printers are fully open source.

Some quick comparisons:
Arduino Mega, Program size: 256K, CPU speed: ~ 16 MIPS
PDP 11/40, Program size: 128K (separate I and D, 64K each), CPU speed: ~
0.4 MIPS.
