Hi Alex,

Thanks. I was able to get gmail to delete at least several GB of emails

It seems I needed to select all of the emails for deletion i.e. transfer 
to Trash. This is just as well since I've backed them up to a local 
folder on Thunderbird. If anyone else here has this issue, I'd be glad 
to help.
