[NCLUG] kdeinit failing on latest KRUD (RH 8.0)

I created a new user and was still not able to login
to KDE. kdeinit version looks fine. Here are the
contents of ~/.xsession-errors:

kdeinit: relocation error:
/usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol:
FT_Get_Next_Char

I'm sure this is the problem, and looks like it could
be related to the char-major-81 issue. I'm googling
now...
