My 2 cents (take it with a grain of salt):

>The goal of the project is to demonstrate
>other viable alternatives to Microsoft Windows as an operating system for
>the personal computer (PC), and to showcase the Linux operating system.

Are you going to demonstrate more than one alternative (like freebsd,
os2, etc) or just linux?

More importantly, "viable alternative" doesn't sound like anything too
interesting. How about "The goal of this event is to showcase
linux; a very robust, easy to use, flexible, and free operating system
that runs many types of applications on a wide range of
computers. This includes everything from spreadsheets on laptops to
large network servers and supercomputing applications.

>Linux has been developed by an International team of computer
>programmers, over the Internet, led by Linus Torvalds. Torvalds created
>Linux while he was a student in Finland. Over the past 9 years, developers
>from almost every country in the world have contributed programs,
>documentation and testing to the development of Linux.

Kind of wordy, how about:

The development of Linux started nine years ago by a Linus Torvalds in
Finland. Since then, tens of thousands of programmers have
contributed programs, documentation, and testing.

>This massive effort
>has created a computer system thought by many to be more reliable and more
>flexible than those produced by traditional proprietary approaches.

great.
